What is Virtual Desktop Infrastructure?

Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) is a technology that refers to the use of virtual machines to provide and manage virtual desktops. VDI hosts desktop environments on a centralized server and deploys them to end-users on request.

Norfolk State University currently has the capacity to accommodate up to 120 remote desktops users using VMware Horizon.

Norfolk State University users have two ways to access a virtual desktop environment:

• By using the VMware Horizon Portal.
• By Install the VMware Horizon Client

Disclaimer

The user has a choice to log off or disconnect the local computer from the VDI. In either case, it is recommended to save all work before choosing an option.

• Log Out = permanent session disconnects from the VDI server.
• Disconnect = Closes the connection to the virtual machine. VMware Horizon will hold you session for 15 minutes after disconnecting.

Note: It is preferred that users log out of the virtual desktop, so they won't "tie up" the virtual machine.
