How to Report a Lost or Stolen Apple Device

Overview

If your NSU-issued Apple device (iPad or MacBook) has been lost or stolen, it is important to report the incident as soon as possible. Prompt reporting allows the Office of Information Technology (OIT) to secure the device, update inventory records, and assist with any necessary follow-up actions.

  • iPad
  • MacBook
  • Other NSU-issued Apple devices

Step 1: Verify the Device Is Lost or Stolen

Before submitting a report:

  • Check your home, classroom, office, vehicle, and other locations where the device may have been left.
  • Contact any departments or facilities where the device may have been turned in.
  • If you believe the device was stolen, proceed immediately to Step 2.

Step 2: File a Police Report

If the device is believed to be stolen, a police report must be filed.

Information to Include

Provide as much information as possible, including:

  • Your full name
  • NSU student or employee ID number
  • Device type (iPad or MacBook)
  • Device serial number (if known)
  • Date and time the device was lost or stolen
  • Last known location of the device
  • Description of the incident

Obtain a Copy of the Report

After filing the report:

  • Request a copy of the police report or case number.
  • Save any documentation provided by law enforcement.

Step 3: Contact the NSU Client Services Office

Report the lost or stolen device to the NSU Client Services Office as soon as possible.

Information to Provide

Include the following information:

  • Full name
  • NSU ID number
  • NSU email address
  • Device type
  • Device serial number (if available)
  • Date the device was lost or stolen
  • Last known location
  • Police report number and supporting documentation

Submission Methods

You may:

  • Visit the Client Services Office in person.
  • Submit a help desk ticket.
  • Email the Client Services Office with the required information and attached police report documentation.

Step 4: OIT Review and Device Security Actions

Once the report is received, the Office of Information Technology may:

  • Verify device ownership and assignment records.
  • Place the device into Lost Mode through Mobile Device Management (MDM).
  • Lock the device to prevent unauthorized use.
  • Update university inventory records.
  • Coordinate with law enforcement if necessary.

Important Information

Replacement Devices

Lost or stolen devices are not automatically eligible for replacement. Eligibility for replacement, if any, will be determined according to University policies and program requirements.

Mobile Device Management (MDM)

NSU-issued devices are enrolled in Mobile Device Management (MDM), which allows the University to:

  • Lock a lost or stolen device.
  • Display recovery information on the device.
  • Prevent unauthorized use.
  • Maintain inventory records.

Personal Data

Students and employees are responsible for maintaining backups of their personal data. NSU is not responsible for data loss resulting from a lost or stolen device.
