How to Install and Configure Cisco Secure Client VPN on macOS

Overview

Cisco Secure Client (formerly Cisco AnyConnect) provides secure remote access to Norfolk State University resources while working off campus. Follow the steps below to install and configure the VPN client using Jamf Self Service.

Prerequisites

  • Your Mac must be enrolled in NSU’s Jamf management system.
  • The Mac must be connected to the internet.
  • You must have an active NSU account.

Installing Cisco Secure Client

1. Open Self Service

  • Open Self Service from the Applications folder, Launchpad, or Spotlight Search.

2. Locate Cisco Secure Client

  • Select the Applications category or use the search bar.
  • Search for Cisco Secure Client.

3. Install the Application

  • Click Install next to Cisco Secure Client.
  • Wait for the installation to complete.

4. Verify Installation

  • Open the Applications folder.
  • Confirm that Cisco Secure Client appears in the list of installed applications.

Configuring the VPN Connection

1. Launch Cisco Secure Client

  • Open Cisco Secure Client from the Applications folder or Launchpad.

2. Enter the VPN Server Address

  • In the VPN connection field, enter:

            Private.nsu.edu/ise

  • Select Connect.

3. Sign In

  • Enter your NSU username and password when prompted.
  • Complete Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) if required.

4. Verify Connection

  • Once connected, the Cisco Secure Client window will display Connected.
  • You should now have secure access to NSU resources.

Disconnecting from VPN

  1. Open Cisco Secure Client.
  2. Select Disconnect.
  3. Verify that the status changes to Disconnected.

Troubleshooting

Unable to Install Cisco Secure Client

  • Verify that your Mac is connected to the internet.
  • Restart your Mac and try the installation again.
  • Ensure your Mac is enrolled in Jamf and Self Service is functioning properly.

Unable to Connect to VPN

  • Verify that the server address is private.nsu.edu/ise.
  • Confirm that your NSU credentials are correct.
  • Ensure that MFA approval has been completed.
  • Disconnect and reconnect to your internet connection and try again.

VPN Connection Drops

  • Check the stability of your internet connection.
  • Restart Cisco Secure Client and reconnect.
  • Restart your Mac if the issue persists.
