How to Remote Control a Windows Computer from a Mac

Overview

You can remotely access your NSU Windows computer from a Mac using Windows App (formerly Microsoft Remote Desktop). Before connecting, you must install the application, connect to the NSU VPN, and know the name of the Windows computer you are trying to access.

Requirements

Before you begin, ensure you have the following:

  • An NSU-managed Mac with access to Self Service
  • An active NSU account
  • Cisco Secure Client VPN installed and configured
  • The Windows computer name of the computer you want to access
  • The Windows computer must be powered on and connected to the NSU network

Step 1: Connect to the NSU VPN

1. Open Cisco Secure Client

  • Launch Cisco Secure Client from the Applications folder or Launchpad.

2. Connect to VPN

  • Enter the VPN server address:
    • Private.nsu.edu/ise
  • Select Connect.

3. Sign In

  • Enter your NSU username and password.
  • Complete Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) if prompted.

4. Verify Connection

  • Confirm that Cisco Secure Client displays a Connected status before proceeding.

Step 2: Install Windows App

1. Open Self Service

  • Launch Self Service from the Applications folder, Launchpad, or Spotlight Search.

2. Search for Windows App

  • Use the search bar and search for Windows App.

3. Install the Application

  • Select Install next to Windows App.
  • Wait for the installation to complete.

4. Verify Installation

  • Open the Applications folder.
  • Confirm that Windows App is installed.

Step 3: Add Your Windows Computer

1. Launch Windows App

  • Open Windows App from the Applications folder or Launchpad.

2. Add a New PC

  • Select Add PC or the + button.

3. Enter the Computer Name

  • In the PC Name field, enter the Windows computer name provided by NSU IT or your department.

Example:

  • COMPUTER-001
  • NSU-PC12345

4. Save the Connection

  • Select Save or Add.

Step 4: Connect to the Windows Computer

1. Open the Saved Connection

  • Double-click the Windows computer you added.

2. Enter Credentials

  • When prompted, enter your NSU username and password.

3. Accept the Certificate (if prompted)

  • Review the certificate information.
  • Select Continue to establish the connection.

4. Begin Remote Session

  • The Windows desktop should appear in a new window.
  • You can now remotely access and control the Windows computer.

 

Disconnecting from the Remote Session

  1. Save any work on the remote computer.
  2. Sign out of Windows if required by your department.
  3. Close the remote desktop window.
  4. Disconnect from the NSU VPN when finished.

Troubleshooting

Unable to Connect to the Windows Computer

  • Verify that you are connected to the NSU VPN.
  • Confirm that the Windows computer name is correct.
  • Ensure the Windows computer is powered on and connected to the NSU network.

Login Failed

  • Verify your NSU username and password.
  • Confirm your account has permission to access the Windows computer.

Windows App Not Available in Self Service

  • Contact the NSU Client Services Office for assistance.

Connection Is Slow

  • Verify that your internet connection is stable.
  • Disconnect and reconnect to the VPN.
  • Close unnecessary applications using network bandwidth.
