Report a Virus, Phish, Other Malicious Emails

Why would I need this service?

Email is a method that hackers use to deliver viruses, malware, or other malicious emails to compromise credentials, steal sensitive data, and carry out a variety of other threats. Phishing has become the most common method of social engineering attacks costing organizations millions of dollars a year. The phishing email message will look legitimate in an attempt to compel a user to click the link and enter his or her username and password. What makes them more difficult to spot is that the first message is a simple question or comment, such as “Quick Request”, “Follow Up,”  “Are you busy?” or “Are you on campus?”

Phishing Example:

Remember the following as some basic rules to look for:

  • Check the email address where it is coming from. In the example above, it came from somewhere other than NSU.
  • Grammar is a big indicator.
  • Were you expecting this message? If not, be suspicious. Don’t be afraid to verify by a phone call or separate conversation via another method.
  • Be wary of opening an attachment or clicking a link when the email is unexpected.
  • Be extra vigilant when a message comes from Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, iCloud, Outlook, My.com, or another free email service anyone in the world can use to fake an account.
  • Listen to your gut. That feeling that something is off is usually correct.

When you receive such messages, please select the "Report an Issue" button or forward it to security@nsu.edu. By doing this, appropriate team members in OIT are notified and can take action to help prevent others from falling prey.
